Beneath Still Water — Part 1

The lake doesn't give back what it takes. It keeps.

The water of Blackwood Lake was the color of a bruise—deep purple and green, swallowing the last of the afternoon sun. Maya stood at the edge, her worn sneakers sinking slightly into the muddy bank. Three years. It had been three years since they'd found Thomas's car at the bottom of this lake, doors sealed shut, windows intact, as if whatever force had pulled him down had done so with a chilling deliberation. No body. Never a body.

"Still nothing?" The voice came from behind her, warm and familiar. It was Liam, her younger brother, his hands shoved deep in his pockets as he approached. He hadn't been here since the funeral, hadn't been able to stand the weight of the grief that hung over Blackwood Lake like a permanent fog.

Maya shook her head, her gaze fixed on the still surface. "The new diving team says the silt is too thick. They can't penetrate it." But she knew the truth. She felt it in her bones every time she got close to the water. It wasn't silt. It was the lake holding its breath. "I have to go in, Liam. I have to know what's down there."

"You can't," he said, his voice sharp with fear. "You'll end up like him. Mom still cries every night. You can't do that to her." But Maya had stopped hearing their pleas months ago. All she heard was the silent call from the depths, a promise of answers that no one on the surface could provide.

The next morning, dawn broke over Blackwood like a pale wound in the sky. Maya stood at the water's edge again, but this time she was different. She wore a wetsuit, a borrowed air tank strapped to her back, and a determination that had hardened into something cold and absolute. She took a final breath of the crisp morning air, the scent of pine and damp earth filling her lungs. She took one step, then another, until the icy water closed over her head, and the world above dissolved into a muffled, distorted silence. As she descended, shapes began to move in the gloom, not fish, but something else—something that had been waiting.
