Crown of Ember Wings — Part 1

A throne of fire needs a queen with scars.

The empress's throne room was a furnace of ambition, and Kaelen stood at its heart, unburned. Above her, the crystal dome of the Imperial Palace refracted the afternoon sun into a thousand tiny daggers, each aimed at the polished obsidian floor where she stood alone. The air itself seemed to shimmer with heat, as if the very stones remembered the dragonfire that had forged them. Kaelen traced the faint, silvery scars that webbed across her palms—mementos from the day she'd survived the Scorched Trials, the day she'd proven herself worthy of consideration. Not yet chosen, but alive in the running.

Outside the palace walls, the city of Ember's Breath sprawled like a dying beast, its smokestacks exhaling gray plumes that stained the eternal blue sky. But here, in the sanctum of power, the air was filtered, cooled, and perfumed with the scent of night-blooming jasmine. The other aspirants—Liora with her sharp eyes and sharper words, Theron with his easy confidence and warrior's bearing—lingered in the shadows, watching her. They knew, as she did, that the Empress would choose only one to wear the Crown of Ember Wings, to become the next Dragon's Voice. And the crown, they whispered, demanded more than just ambition. It demanded scars.

The great doors hissed open, revealing the Empress herself, a woman carved from volcanic stone and wisdom. Her gaze swept across the throne room, lingering for a moment on each candidate before settling on Kaelen. "The trials approach," she announced, her voice like gravel shifting in an ancient riverbed. "And with them, the final test." She held up a small, obsidian box, its surface carved with the image of a coiled dragon. "Inside lies the last scale of the First Dragon. Touch it, and you will either be chosen or consumed. There is no middle path."

Kaelen's heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone. The other candidates paled, but she felt a strange calm settle over her. This was what she had trained for, what she had bled for. As the Empress extended the box, Kaelen stepped forward, her gaze locked on the ancient artifact. She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly, and brushed against the cool stone. The moment her skin made contact, the world erupted in fire.
