Fireflies for Sale — Part 1

In a world where memories can be bought and sold, the brightest ones always come with a price.

The market opened at dusk, as it always did, when the last sliver of daylight surrendered to the indigo sky. Elias threaded his way through the crowded alleyways, the scent of ozone and old parchment hanging heavy in the air. Vendors hawked their wares in hushed tones: bottled dreams, captured laughter, and the rarest of commodities—fireflies. Not the ordinary kind that flickered in summer meadows, but these were different. These were memory-fireflies, each one containing a stolen moment from someone else's life, glowing with the residual warmth of joy or the cold spark of sorrow.

He stopped at a stall where the proprietor, a woman with skin like crumpled parchment and eyes that held too many secrets, was arranging her latest acquisitions. "Looking for something specific tonight, Elias?" she asked without looking up. Her voice was like dry leaves skittering across pavement. He always came to her stall; she had the best stock, and she never asked questions. Not about where the memories came from or who they'd been taken from. That was the unspoken rule of the market—don't ask, don't tell, just buy.

"I need something bright," Elias said, his voice barely a whisper. "Something that feels like... sunshine. On skin." His fingers traced the edge of his pocket, where the few coins he'd managed to save felt heavy and inadequate. The woman finally looked at him, her gaze lingering on the faded scar that ran from his wrist to his elbow. "The bright ones are expensive," she said. "And they don't last long. People pay good money to feel happy, even if it's not their own happiness." She reached beneath her counter and produced a small, ornate jar. Inside, a dozen fireflies pulsed with a warm, golden light. "This one's called 'Beach Day.' From a child's seventh summer. Untouched. Pure."

Elias stared at the jar, his breath catching in his throat. He could almost feel the sand between his toes, hear the laughter of children he'd never know. It was everything he wanted and everything he couldn't afford. "How much?" he asked, already knowing the answer. The woman named a price that would clean him out completely, leave him with nothing but empty pockets and emptier nights. As he hesitated, the fireflies in the jar began to dim, their light flickering uncertainly. "They sense doubt," the woman said softly. "Or perhaps they sense the buyer who can't truly afford what they're purchasing." Just then, a shadow fell across the stall, and a voice, smooth as velvet but cold as ice, said, "I'll take that one. And all the others like it." Elias turned to see a man in a tailored suit, his eyes gleaming with an unholy hunger. The woman nodded, her expression unreadable, and began to wrap the Beach Day fireflies for the new customer. Elias stood frozen, watching as his only chance at warmth was being snatched away, the golden light in the jar growing dimmer with each passing second as the stranger's payment changed hands.
