The Salt-Glass Compass — Part 1

It points to what you've lost. Captain Vela wants it anyway.

The salt-laced wind whipped at Captain Elara Vela's coat as her ship, *The Mariner's Ghost*, cut through the churning sea. The sky above was bruised purple and black, mirroring the tempest that had been brewing in her soul for a decade. She stood at the helm, her knuckles white on the worn wood, not watching the turbulent waves but staring at the strange compass in her hands. It was made of salt-crusted glass, its needle pointing not north, but toward something else entirely—something she had lost and would now risk everything to reclaim. Her first mate, a burly man named Roric with a face like weathered leather, approached his captain, his voice barely audible over the storm's roar. "Cap'n, the men are nervous. This compass... it ain't natural. And this storm... it ain't natural neither." Elara didn't look at him. Her gaze remained fixed on the compass, which now pulsed with a faint, internal light. "Natural has nothing to do with it, Roric. We're following a ghost, and ghosts don't care about the weather." She remembered the day she'd found the compass, washed ashore on a desolate island after the wreck of her previous vessel. It had been the only thing left from her past, the only clue to the whereabouts of her brother, who had vanished during a routine voyage ten years ago. The compass didn't point to places; it pointed to loss. And it was leading her straight into the heart of the most dangerous waters on the map. The crew muttered among themselves, their fear palpable. They had signed on for treasure, for adventure, not to chase a phantom memory with a broken compass. But Elara's will was iron. She had spent a decade searching, and this was the first real lead she'd had. "Ready the cannons," she commanded, her voice cutting through the wind like a blade. "And tell the men to keep their eyes peeled. We're not just sailing through a storm; we're sailing into a memory." The ship lurched as a massive wave crashed against its hull, but Elara stood firm, the compass glowing brighter in her hand. She knew what lay ahead—a treacherous reef known as the Sorrow's Teeth, a graveyard of ships and dreams. But she also knew that somewhere beyond that danger, her brother waited. Or at least, what was left of him. The compass's needle twitched, then locked onto a new direction, straight toward the jagged rocks looming ahead. Roric's face paled. "Cap'n, that's the Sorrow's Teeth! No ship has ever come back from there!" Elara smiled, a fierce, determined expression that held no warmth. "Then it's a good thing we're not coming back. We're going through."
