TWO SUGARS, WRONG ADDRESS — PART 1

The coffee was perfect. The delivery was fatal.

Emma tightened her grip on the cardboard tray, the weight of five carefully crafted beverages pressing into her palms. The morning rush at "Brewed Awakening" had been brutal, a symphony of milk steamers and espresso grinders that had left her ears ringing and her forearms aching. But she'd done it. Every order was correct, every cup flawlessly labeled with sharpie on the cardboard sleeves. This last tray was her ticket to freedom—ten minutes to sit in the cramped break room, maybe even step outside for a breath of fresh air before the afternoon caffeine crash hit the city.

"Last call for the Henderson account!" she called out, her voice barely cutting through the low hum of conversation and clinking ceramic. She scanned the familiar faces of her regulars—the law student who always ordered a black Americano, the elderly couple sharing a blueberry scone, the woman in the corner who typed furiously on her laptop between sips of a vanilla latte. No one made eye contact. The Henderson order was for delivery, a corporate catering job for the law firm three blocks away. She'd packed it with extra napkins and a sleeve of cookies, just as the client had requested.

Outside, the city was awakening. The autumn air bit at her cheeks, carrying the scent of damp pavement and exhaust fumes. She turned the corner onto Maple Street, her boots crunching over fallen leaves. The Henderson building came into view, a sleek glass monolith that reflected the pale morning sky. She pushed through the revolving doors, the scent of lemon polish and air conditioning replacing the coffee and street air. The receptionist gave her a nod, and Emma made her way to the front desk of the firm's reception area, her heart already starting to relax.

"Delivery for Henderson, Inc.?" she asked, setting the tray on the polished granite countertop.

A young woman with sharp, intelligent eyes looked up from her computer. "That's me, thanks," she said, taking the tray with a practiced ease. "You saved my life. The partners are in a vicious mood today."

Emma smiled, the familiar warmth of a job well done spreading through her chest. "Just doing my part." She watched as the woman carried the tray toward a conference room, the scent of coffee growing fainter as she disappeared through the heavy doors. Emma turned to leave, already thinking about that promised break, when she heard a voice from behind her.

"Excuse me? Did you happen to deliver a coffee order for the Henderson conference room?"

Emma turned to see a man standing by the reception desk, his tailored suit looking expensive but slightly rumpled. His dark hair was messy, as if he'd run his hands through it one too many times, and his brown eyes were wide with a mixture of hope and desperation.

"I just dropped one off," Emma said. "Five coffees, pastries, the whole package."

The man's face fell. "That's not ours. We ordered two coffees. Two sugars. One for me, one for my daughter." He looked past Emma, toward the conference room the other woman had entered. "That was for the merger team. They're celebrating. We're... we're not."
