What the Docks Remember

Some ropes don't just tie things together—they tie down things that shouldn't be moving.

The fog came in slow that night, thick as cotton and just as suffocating. Elias adjusted his collar, the damp wool scratching against his neck as he walked the decaying pier. The old wood groaned under his weight, each plank protesting with a sharp crack that echoed in the stillness. He'd been coming here for years, ever since they found his father's body floating facedown in these same waters. The official report said drowning, but Elias knew better. His father had been a strong swimmer, and there were those strange rope burns circling his wrists.

The moon struggled to pierce through the fog, casting weak shafts of light that danced on the black water below. Elias's boots made soft thuds on the weathered planks, sounds swallowed by the immense silence. The air smelled of brine and decay, of something ancient that refused to be forgotten. He clutched the thermos in his pocket, the cheap whiskey inside a poor substitute for the courage he wished he'd brought instead.

Then he saw it. A figure standing at the very end of the pier, silhouetted against the water. Too still to be real, too perfect against the mist. Elias's heart hammered against his ribs as he took a step forward, then another. The figure didn't move, didn't breathe. As he drew closer, Elias could make out the details—the way the fog seemed to swirl around it without touching, the unnatural stillness of its form. His father's favorite fishing hat sat atop its head, the same one that had been buried with him.

The figure turned, its face a featureless void in the moonlight. Elias opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. From the depths below, ropes began to rise, dripping with black water, coiling like serpents around the pilings. They stretched toward him, reaching, grasping, and as the first cold, wet rope touched his ankle, the world dissolved into nothing but terror.
